The Grotto Of Our Lady of Lourdes is located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The grotto was built in 1896 and is a one seventh scale model of the cave near Lourdes, France where the Virgin Mary appeared to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous. In the upper right hand corner of the photograph you can see a statue of the Virgin Mary as she may have been seen by Bernadette who is depicted by a statue in the lower left portion of the photograph. The significance of this particular grotto photo is that it was captured shortly after the death of Pope John Paul II, whose image was affixed upon the grotto for a special prayer service upon Pope John Paul II’s death on April 2, 2005.
