This photograph is of the inscription “God, Country, Notre Dame” which is carved above the entry doors on the east side of the Sacred Heart Basilica. This particular doorway entrance is known as the Memorial Door as the inscription was originally intended to honor the men of Notre Dame who died in World War I. This photo was captured shortly after the death of Pope John Paul II therefore the bunting is of particular significance. The purple bunting signifies mourning while the yellow and white buntings are the colors of the Papacy.
